Doc Long's father, uncle and partner started in the grading business in the early twenties grading roads primarily in Rockingham and Guilford counties. Setting up camp on the job sites with their equipment and crew. Although Doc's fascination with dump trucks grew, his fascination and ambition were delayed, as he was drafted into the Army in 1943 and placed in the 79th Infantry Division as a foot soldier. In 1944, Doc Long was wounded in France and laid wounded on the battlefield for 18 hours. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Cluster for the wounds he received in combat.
After returning home, Doc and his brother, James bought their first truck, a used 1935 Ford. Together with their youngest brother, George, they built Long's Service Station and Grill in 1947. The following year, they purchased their first new Ford dump truck for $2,000. They started their first job hauling dirt from the Ellis Stone Department Store's building on Elm Street in Greensboro to Overseas Replacement Depot (ORD).
In 1952, with the continued success of Long Brothers, the three found a second business, Asphalt Paving Company of Greensboro. However, in June of 1977, the family suffered the devastating loss of George, who was killed in a private airplane crash. In 1983 James remained with the Asphalt Paving Company of Greensboro and Doc continued on with Long Brothers of Summerfield, along with his sons, Charles and Gurney, and his daughter, Patty, later in 1984. A few years later, Patty formed her own company, Hilco Transport, Inc. and in 1999, the two companies merged.
In 2003, Wendi Brewer, daughter of Charles Long, purchased trucks from Vulcan and re-established Long Brothers. Shortly thereafter, the family suffered the tragic loss of Charles Long, pushing through this loss, Long Brothers continued to establish growth and a dominant presence in the Triad area.
In 2022, Pamela Fulp along with her three sons, Luke, Landon, and Logan purchased Long Brothers. With their background exposure and experience, determination, and dedication they put forth into this business, they continue to carry on and grow the legacy that all began in 1945.
